Improved travel conditions

Starting from the 6th of July, 2025, individuals from countries that are members of the Pacific Islands Forum will enjoy enhanced travel opportunities to New Zealand. Those who are granted a Visitor Visa will have the privilege of visiting New Zealand multiple times within a span of 24 months. This change marks a significant step towards fostering closer ties and facilitating easier travel for citizens of these nations.

Under the new regulations, visitors will be allowed to stay in New Zealand for a cumulative total of up to 6 months within any 12-month period during the 24-month timeframe. However, it is important to note that the total duration of stay cannot exceed 9 months within an 18-month period. This flexibility is designed to accommodate the diverse travel needs of individuals, whether for tourism, family visits, or other purposes.

Despite these improvements, travellers must still adhere to the established requirements for obtaining a Visitor Visa. This includes providing necessary documentation and meeting health and character criteria. Additionally, it is crucial for applicants to be aware that they may receive a visa for a shorter duration if their passport is nearing expiration or if there are any other concerns regarding their eligibility. This ensures that all travellers maintain compliance with New Zealand's immigration policies while enjoying the benefits of improved travel conditions.

Visa-free travel

In a further effort to enhance travel convenience, holders of passports from Pacific Islands Forum countries will be able to travel to New Zealand from Australia without the need for a visa, as part of a trial program set to commence in November 2025. This groundbreaking initiative will last for a duration of 12 months and is designed to streamline the travel process for those already in Australia.

During this trial period, any individual possessing a passport from a Pacific Islands Forum country and holding a valid visitor, work, student, or family visa for Australia will be eligible to enter New Zealand using the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). This allows them to stay in New Zealand for up to 3 months without the necessity of applying for a traditional visa. It is important to clarify that this policy does not extend to individuals who are merely transiting through Australia, ensuring that the benefits are reserved for those who are genuinely traveling to New Zealand.

Until the initiation of this trial, individuals from Pacific Islands Forum countries will still be required to obtain the appropriate visa to enter New Zealand. This ensures that all travellers are aware of the current requirements and can prepare accordingly.
